August 2009 Archives

EclipseBenefits.pngI found the following clipping in a presentation created by Ralph Müller (Director, Eclipse Foundation) . In his presentation Ralph summarizes a few facts that aim to explain, why companies from the automotive Industry have decided to cooperate within an Open Source industry working group with the objective to define common standards for their industry. The clipping itself is from Hanse Report on Automotive Electronics.

Having started a discussion about the timing and opportunities of deploying semantic technologies for the enterprise in my last blog entry I though discussing this question would make all the sense in the world.

Are we ready for the semantic enterprise?

For those of you who understand German, here is a link to what initially seemed to be a provocative article. As it turns out, it was inspiring and lead me to post this question asking your help.

Just a little background about the author: Prof. Dr. Gunter Dueck (Business Leader, Dynamic Infrastructure, IBM Germany Chief Technologist, IBM Innovation Network, Germany IBM Distinguished Engineer & Member of the IBM Academy of Technology IBM Deutschland) in other words a guy who gets paid by IBM to ask the kinds of questions they do not want to be asked.

Stefan Wess of Attensity Group published an article that describes Attensity Empolis long road to finally deciding to invest into Open Source and to initiate SMILA base on that decision.

This is even more astonishing we taking into consideration, that Attensity Group with more than 500 enterprise clients is one of the worlds leading providers of information logistics solutions. If anyone could ever have economies of scale in reinventing the wheel for information logistics, then Attensity Group would definitely be it.

Well, if you have had any doubts about the potential of semantic technologies then please take the time to review the below video.
If you have not got any doubts, please view the video anyway.
This is what I want my tax money to be spent on. I want research that comes up with software that will make a difference in our lives! And this type of stuff will make a huge difference!

My sincere thanks to Paolo, Giovanni and the rest of the Sindice and SIGMA team!

I have just come back from a few days of vacation during the course of which I have finally been able to catch up with some reading.
One of the most exciting and to some degree scary things I have come across was a video published by the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi).
I found this video on the website of John Dominique. John is the President of STI International a global organization with members in Europe, North America, and Asia with a mission to "make semantics real".

Let's think about this video and its message for a moment... How do you feel about STis Vision of the future? Please feel free to comment ;-)

Information is the lifeblood of any company. While organizations have made significant progress in analyzing their structured data (such as sales figures and number of complaints), the reality is that most company information is unstructured. This unstructured information includes claims, contracts, patents, call center notes, clinical trial records, and survey responses, which are often stored in enterprise content management systems. Content management systems are a treasure trove of information since there is a significant amount of insight that can be derived from this unstructured data.
