One of the most exciting and to some degree scary things I have come across was a video published by the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi).
I found this video on the website of John Dominique. John is the President of STI International a global organization with members in Europe, North America, and Asia with a mission to "make semantics real".
Future Internet from KMi on Vimeo.
Let's think about this video and its message for a moment... How do you feel about STis Vision of the future? Please feel free to comment ;-)
With SMILA being the basis for the German Theseus Programm I was aware of the fact that SAP is very serious about semantic technologies and their future potential as part of business processes. At the same time I was not aware of the dimension of commitment and investment companies like SAP and the European Governments were putting into the semantic web. No question that this will have a significant impact on our private lives, but also our business life will be affected. Just consider the effect this will have on the half-life of information! This in turn will have a dramatic impact on the speed at which organizations will need to adapt to changing forces in the market. In my mind there will be a need to start fighting fire with fire. As a consequence organizations need to brace themselves for a dramatic increase in the use of just those technologies, that by exerting market forces, are bound to change the way we all are working today.
The good news for those of us, who would like things to progress a little less rapidly is that in spite of the huge investments: Many aspects of this vision require standards and technologies that have yet to be invented.
You would like to be part of the wild few, who are working on the forefront of these new technologies? Well, here are a few cool projects that might be worth looking at or even worth contributing to:
MITs SMILE ProjectDERIs Sindice Project
DERIs SIG.MA Project
OKKAM
Eclipse SMILA Project
