I just got the invitation for this years semantic web days in Leipzig and wanted to let you know that they have done a wonderful job at getting an interesting mix of technical speakers and business/industry/government use-case presentations.
The eccenca team will be present as well and will provide a short presentation of its vision of how the Eclipse.org project SMILA (semantic information logistics architecture) will fill the gap between the semantic web and today's enterprise IT infrastructure.
General information on the event including registration can be found at: http://aksw.org/LSWT
The eccenca/SMILA presentation will take place on Mai 6th at 11:45 am.

I will be there for the evening session on the 5th and would like to invite everyone to participate in a discussion of how semantic technology can become a key success factor to the enterprise.
Every reasonable suggestion will automatically result in an invitation to have a few beers with me;-)

Looking forward to seeing you there,

So why should the eDiscoverer boost your productivity in comparison to existing systems?

The eDiscoverer features a superior fault-tolerant search and indexing technology. Besides it enables users to quickly find and review documents from remote severs. Companies usually don't allow desktop search engines to index fileshares
over the network as the resulting increase in traffic has been linked to network break down. But how are we supposed to quickly find important documents on remote servers without being able to index network drives?
eDiscoverer has the ability to seamlessly connect to
eccenca server engines. These are directly placed on central file- or groupware-servers to
avoid network traffic during indexing. Lightning fast document preview functions assure instant gratification and improved "findability" with eccenca - no matter if documents are stored locally or on a remote server.

Having started a discussion about the timing and opportunities of deploying semantic technologies for the enterprise in my last blog entry I though discussing this question would make all the sense in the world.

If I am going to get feedback from my readers on their take - as to what it will take to make semantic technologies pervasively available in the enterprise context - I expect it to be focusing on these aspects:

Tools

Standards

Best Practices / use Cases

Solutions

I agree that all of the above should be put into place before semantic technologies reach pervasive distribution. Let us take a step back. If in fact we - the tech geeks - have seen a set of technologies that can have a huge impact on the business world, then we need to figure out how we can get the business people to share our understanding and start adopting these new techniques.

Well, if we assume for a moment that semantic enterprise technologies can have a huge impact. What could we do to get these things off the ground?

You guessed it - start an Eclipse.org project and working group. There is no other place on this planet where you will find more tooling competence. No other organization has such a pragmatic and successful track record in creating standards by implementing them in industry consortia. Make the stuff you are developing Open Source, so that as many people as possible can benefit at minimal cost - and you have the fastest and most dependable way to finding best practices and use cases.
Your bet is on solutions? How are you going to expedite the process of the creation of new solutions for a new technical era? Provide dependable standards, infrastructure, tooling and a vast community of early adopters and "tech-geeks" like us...The eclipse Foundation has approximately 200 enterprises investing into the future of eclipse by contribution resources. The IDE has a market share of approximately 70%. Where else would you go, what other options would you have to maximize the chances of success for your initiative?

We are seeing such industry working groups in the automotive tools chain, the insurance industry, the health care market and the semantic technologies market, where we are one of the leaders.
So, if ever you were wondering whom to turn to or what to do to minimize cost and risk and maximize adoption for your technology driven industry vision....Eclipse.org might be a good place to start looking.

Are we ready for the semantic enterprise?

For those of you who understand German, here is a link to what initially seemed to be a provocative article. As it turns out, it was inspiring and lead me to post this question asking your help.
http://www.omnisophie.com/day_97.html
Just a little background about the author: Prof. Dr. Gunter Dueck (Business Leader, Dynamic Infrastructure, IBM Germany Chief Technologist, IBM Innovation Network, Germany IBM Distinguished Engineer & Member of the IBM Academy of Technology IBM Deutschland) in other words a guy who gets paid by IBM to ask the kinds of questions they do not want to be asked.
It is funny isn't is? You have to give some credit to IBM to spend some money on guys like him. It is money well spent I may say, because everyone I know who has heard him speak felt that it was really enlightening and entertaining at the same time. Go to see him, if ever he is speaking somewhere near to your place.

But back to the question.
Gunter was postulating, that the majority of good ideas lie half dead in some corner, not because the idea is bad, but because the required infrastructure, mindset and whatever else is necessary for the idea to blossom, is missing. (He actually complains about people who come to him with ideas that are half baked and have not bothered to confirm that the infrastructure necessary for the ideas success is actually in place)

Here are some simple examples of ideas he sights:
Amazone had to wait a long time before the internet was actually available to a broad audience and the more time before people understood that e-commerce is not evil. SecondLife had only the slightest chance once there was broad availability of high internet bandwidth, digital cameras started selling well when people started sending pictures by mail....video phones will be a killer product, once others have them too and there will be once again enough bandwidth.....you could go on like - who needs ships, if there are no harbors or airplanes if there are no landing strips. I bet you get the message by now!

The question I would like to debate with you is: What are the prerequisites for the semantic enterprise to come to life?
We are seeing the semantic web coming to life with the LOD cloud growing like weeds. In this case it was standards like microformats, RDF, Sparql, scalable triple stores and maybe even applications like DBPedia and Parallax etc. and of course restless efforts by TBL.

You know that we have set our sights on building an open semantic information logistics architecture for the enterprise. Is this a ship that is yet without a harbor, or are we building railroad tracks without providing trains?

Please give me your ideas as to what are the missing bits and pieces that we need to put together to get the semantic enterprise off the ground!

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

If anyone could ever have economies of scale in reinventing the wheel for information logistics, then Attensity Group would definitely be it.

Still they decided otherwise and Stefan explains that this was due to two reasons:
1) They listened to their clients who like the idea
2) They analyzed past sales and sale profitability and found that customers were choosing Attensity group for its unique technology and not the technology it was built on

We have been very closely involved in this decision process and of course Stefans decision to give us the go ahead to launch the project as part of the Eclipse Foundation.
We spoke with other German partners and clients and they all agreed - the future will belong to hybrid solutions that share the cost of a deployment platform built in an Open Source setting while creating an ideal setting to leverage ones technological and process USPs in a way that creates the biggest value for the user.

If you are curious to learn why one of the worlds leading information logistics companies decided to initiate SMILA with brox, please read Stefan Wess post at Attensity.com:

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
